An adult dovii reaches about 20" long, so if you don't worry about the spine being intact you can fit one in a 10 gallon.

I'm sure if you were really set on it you could get on in a 2 gallon, but it might have to be pureed.

The question should not be what is the smallest tank, it should be what is an adequate tank for a healthy adult fish. I'd say around 600 gallons.

no need for the sarcasm mate, i asked a question, being, 'what is the smallest tank i could keep a male in', then asking if a 180g would do, simple answer is all i was looking for.
and you understood the question, so why correct it, i dont have a dovii, i wasnt planning on getting one, unless i had enough space.
So come on bloke, whats the point of being a tool about it.

Like I said, there is a difference between the smallest you can put one in and a tank that allow the fish to exhibit its natural behavior.

The smallest tank you could keep a male dovii is never going to be a tank that has a fish that grows to its full potential and shows natural behavior.

Just asking what the smallest tank you can keep a male dovii in leads me to believe you probably shouldn't own one. It's also been asked again and again. Here, Here, and Here. And those are just the threads with over 20 replies that have "dovii tank size" in the title...

I've personally seen an adult male dovii with his female in a 600 gallon tank (just the two of them) and he made it look small and still attacked people outside the tank. Link

whats the problem here, when i put this question out, i thought it would be obvious, im not going to put a dovii in a tiny tank, but wanted to know would a 180 be a humane option. and mate even if i do decide to own a dovii someday, it will be givin the best care i can afford, i wouldnt buy the fish before i had right set up for it anyway.
is it so hard to ask something, and not then be blasted for it, when the question wasnt specific enough.

dont get too worked out mate, doviis wont reach 20" over night, and you can really count by your digits of those whom actually owned a 20" monster in their monster tanks from amongst millions of dovii keepers:chillpill:
6x2x2 is good enough for 3 years at least, by then your fish should reached 16-18" given proper care.

just remember, not all doviis will reach monster size, doesnt matter how great a care and tank sizes given if their gene dictates that they will only reach a certain size, just like us human.:screwy:

hence..... you dont see that many keepers with an actual monster doviis, just empty claims.

ps. i am growing up a batch of frys from my pair let me know if youre interested in some:naughty:

I think you are getting blasted because of the way the thread turned from '100gallons' post. You have done nothing wrong here, people are just being annoying to you. Ignore them for now and have fun with your dovii

And there are not many 20" dovii because 99% of them are kept in inadequate tanks...Hence the few LARGE dovii are in the few LARGE tanks. You're not going to see a 20" dovii in a 180 gallon tank, but I can show you a good dozen that are 18"+ that are kept in 600 gallons or larger. Coincidence? No.

Human and fish size are quite different. Fish continue to grow throughout their lives while humans max out pretty early on (for their lifespan). Most humans also have the space and food to maximize their genetic potential (at least in developed countries). Keep a dovii in a smaller tank and you're not going to see it live to make 20". A self-fulfilling prophecy.

:iagree:

I asked this question before and was told my 265g was plenty big enough to house a Dovii for life. I found out the hard way that it wasn't. The tank was already getting to small for him at less than 16". He was crashing the sides of the tank so hard, I could hear the pops throughout the house. He actually broke 2 of the glass lids by crashing into them. I think if I left him in there, he would have eventually broke the tank or literally killed himself trying.

Umm, there really isn't any science behind your statement is there?
I did read a long time ago about 2 identical fish of exactly the same size and weight from the same batch, being put in 2 different containers, 1 being very large, 1 that was very much "too small" and they gew at the exact same rate.

But to understand your question, are you saying, that a fish will grow larger given more volume of water, or more space to move around in?

Obviously i realise nitrates will be higher in the smaller tank faster which can affect the rates, however, you can't know if the smaller tank get's enough waterchanges to keep the nitrates at the same levels as the big tank, or even smaller.

Also i'm curious to know why you say a dovii won't even reach 20" in a 180g, cause it will die before reaching it?

At one time in my early fish days, I kept a male GT in a 55g tank for 8 years. He was the craziest meanest SOB you ever laid eyes on. Always attacking anyone or anthing that came in the room. Until one day, when I upgraded him to a 135g tank. From that day forward, he never banged the glass again. He was just an ordinary fish, calmly swimming the tank. I kind of missed his mean days but it was ok. I think the small space drove him insane and that's why he beat himself senseless. Comapared to a Dovii, the GT is smaller and less capable of mortally wounding himself in a crazy fit of rage.
