Dovii Thoughts~Help Requested

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Halfway thru the process, removed all fish in 150 that needed to go.

Move the Lil Bartoni, Lil Calobrense, Lil Gold Saum, and Lil Silver Saum to the 75, removed 1x-Lyonsi to Kevin, Cleaned and Gravel Vac'ed the 75........

Now back to the 150 for gravel swap (Red Flint take out 75 of 150#, replace the 75 with straight black) then Filter Maintenance, and rebuild.......

I may not be on until a BIT later.......As said by Mike Myers....

I'm saying when you read max sizes on fishbase and some other pages no one knows how old that fish is they used for measurements. There are some fish that reach their printed max size no problem in a couple years, while others seemingly you never see near the max size printed everywhere which leads me to believe some max sizes listed for some species are very old fish.

Sure a gator gar can get to 10ft but how old is it? You're talking decades upon decades old. Sure a pima can get 15' probably but how old is a fish that big. Fish can live for a very long time in the wild.

I have never seen a captive raised dovii over 22" or so. I mean measured with a tape measure, no guesstimations. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist, but I take it as being not the norm at least for fish a couple years old. My point was that rather than room being the reason we see most dovii no larger than 20" or so is time to grow, not lack of space. Because even those with large space and some with seemingly unlimited space aren't much larger/same sized.
Well put:)

I guess I'll have to start beng a little more literal in my comments so I don't confuse anyone...

These fish didn't just start being kept in the last two or three years..... Where are all the big fish?
This is part of cichlaguapotes point. You can search and search and the big guys are rare. Most I have seen seem to make 16"-20".To assume every fish out of a batch will be 20+" is just wrong. Not every fish out of every batch can be a fish that will reach full potentail. It is nature.

I hate to keep pounding the same point, I just don't think you guys have the right picture of a fully grown dovii. Plus, in spite of the numerous claims otherwise, I don't believe that there are more than a handful of large fish in the country right now. I challenge anyone to post a picture of their 20" dovii (with the notable exception of a certain person!!!). Heck, I'll settle for a verifiable 18"...... No takers?

Have any of you guys ever tried to measure a live fully grown dovii? If you have, you know you'll never try again!

Only a handful of people have shown the skill and commitment necessary to allow these fish to reach their full potential. Show me a picture of something like this in a home aquarium:

I doubt anyone will be able to meet my challenge, but I really hope I'm wrong. I'd love to see it!

I already told you why you won't see them.. I know of a dovii in a 50k gallon tank that isn't the max size you think they should get..

I just crapped myself..........

DAYUM!

Now you got me crapping again!

:eek::eek:

I think everyone has some very valid points on tank space and time it takes to grow out of a tank, those pictures of the wild dovii are awsome buy the way.Im sure if nuth88 still has the dovii 15 yrs down the road and is pushing 20+ inches he will upgrade to a giant size tank to make him happy.

So I guess that means you're not going to offer up a photo? It's obviously because dovii over 20" don't exist. You're right.

O.K. Now that I'm busted, I'll come clean. Those fish I posted were all recently mentioned in the Mitchell Report. It's just that once everybody read Clemens' name, they stopped reading and didn't get to the part about the growth hormone enhanced dovii. :naughty:

Seriously though, the fish you mention is listed at 22" by the owner (and that was a while ago). Also, that fish has pretty advanced HITH. I hesitate to point that out as I don't want to be overly critical, but the size of the tank isn't all that matters. You'd have to do a water, food, and habitat analysis to identify the quality of any environment, big or small.
