Dovii Umbee and Festae?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you get them all young and raise them together they will fight and do some damage but once they get used to each other there be ok. I'm keeping a Red devil dovii buttikoferi red terror all in a 220 gallon and they don't fight anymore they all respect the dovii.

Doviis are notorious for snapping at other fishes as they progress bigger.

Dovii do snap a lot as they get bigger. I'd say 600gallon minimum for all 3

Guess I'll just stick to my terrors and maybe get a orino or two haha thanks guys

I have all three living together with a bunch more growouts. all fish are between 2-3 inches. not much aggression right now, as there are enough fish to disperse the aggression, and I also keep my tank at lower temps. 76 degrees which i also thinks help. I do have three separate tanks for when my umbee, dovii, and festae get larger though, as I don't see them getting along in the long run. I will mention that the umbee and dovii are definitely at the top of the pecking order, with the festae more toward the middle. good luck with whatever you choose.

The dovii will takeover eventually its just depends if they learn to get along as they grow , try a few slightly smaller distraction fish and keep the territories to a min so there all in open water as much as poss , after a few bottles of melafix and lots of shredded fins I tried this as a last resort with a dovii , festae , Texas and a salvini and got there in the end , they settled down and are growing fine together now

I agree with some of the others here that have suggested getting them small and letting them grow up together. I have put several fish together that "aren't recommended" and they have been fine. I think mostly it was because they grew up together.

I would say to give it a try as long as the fish don't cost you an arm and a leg. I have noticed that if you have just one male with very aggressive fish it seems to work out better. But I have also noticed that having three fish is harder than four in these instances because one usually gets killed when the other two pair off, or just becomes the odd man out when the two dominant fish establish themselves. I'd add a convict to the mix or something that's tough and small. You bought a 220 you might as well try to live the dream, go for it. Just my two sense.

Yes it's possible to keep them together when there young. But as they grow your going to lose fish. I would say two years max. First the festae because it grows slower and don't count the umbee out. From my experience they grow a little faster then the dovii. My 13" dovii is a glass banging freak but I've never seen a fish more of a aggressive killing machine then my 14" umbee!

If you do, make sure you overcrowd, and have no ornaments or hiding places in the tank when they are bigger, if you keep them on the lookout they will be watching their backs rather than looking for fights!

works for me!

I agree I've just put a tangle of bog wood in the centre of my tank now and the aggression has calmed a lot no caves or pipes to fight over , there's always gona be a dominant one but that cichlids , I've found that if you fully stock the tank when there juvies you'll prob end up with a decent number of adults that have grown up together and know there place in the tank , would advise to use the no territory aproach while young though , good luck
