Well too bad it didn't work out but I think your going to have to keep him alone.

yeah i tried putting it with a slightly bigger coal grunter and the grunter hated him so yeah looks like hes guna be by himself

2 Females wouldnt work either. They are just as territorial as the males. Female dovii's are just as nasty as the males. You can try to raise them together at a small size but if you add a female to either species, then all hell is going to break loose when they want to spawn.

i think mine might be female but its only 2" so well see

I have been keeping a male umbee and a female dovii together hoping for a hybrid. Sadly it has yet to happen and it's been a few years they spawn but never any fry. I figure the eggs are just not getting fertilized maybe the pleco snuck in and ate the eggs, wigglers etc... or most likely it's just not a possibile cross. They are currently in a 500gal with other cichlids and a gg some tinfoils barbs and a few others.

yeah i had a jag and a green terror that spawned like every 3wks but i never saw any hatch. some eggs would turn white disappear every night till they were gone

apennell07,

I just went through the same deal as you. Yes, I'm a newb. :screwy:

Tried to throw a juvenile male dovii in with a juvenile jag and a juvenile buttikoferi with the hope of getting them to live together in peace. Didn't work out. The jag got beat up bad and the buttikoferi was also given a whipping. Thankfully nobody was killed. The dovii is living by himself now. All this took place within the span of a week.

Thats ur problem right there. If you have a pleco in there, then no chance for the eggs or wrigglers to survive. Take that pleco out. Surprise they havent killed the pleco. My Jag pair killed my plecos when they wanted to spawn. They actually flipped the pleco over to their soft side and went to town. So take that pleco out. That would be a interesting hybrid. It will make for a big nasty fish. GL
