Dovii vs Tilapi Butikoferi

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Having kept both species, not together of course at different times IME its Butti all the way mostly because it is relentless. The dovii would eventually back off to at least take a break from killing to eat or dig or whatever. The Butti I had would do nothing but attack till the target of its aggression was dead. This fish should only be kept singly I learned the hard way with this guy as I'm sure many of you have

dovii without a doubt, anyone who says butti is dreaming, dovii vs emporer cichlid would be a better match.

I would say dovii, they get bigger, stronger, and have better equipment...and seem to have more of an inclination to use them. I've seen cichlid comm's with butti's living somewhat peacefully, something you rarely if ever see with adult dovii.

What about umbee?
Dovii and Umbeee meanest and bad ass :)

If both were full size a Dovii would have a size advantage and thus probably win, however I noticed reading over this that (except for one person) everyone who actually put these two fish together at similar sizes said the Butti won... Sounds to me like pound for pound they may be overall more aggressive...

My vote would be a male dovii as being the most aggressive in my experience. However the male Butt is very close.

In large tanks like mine both mellow out and once dominance is established years go by without much aggression.

Placed back into smaller tanks under 500 gallons both of their aggressive natures return.

My smaller Dovii male in the 52 (17") was always more aggressive than my 22-23" male in the 15. The bigger Dovii died in 2009 after being killed by the 26" black shark (Not a fair fight as the old Dovii was very long on the tooth..pun intended).
The smaller Dovii is still doing well in the the 52.

I've seen some truly monstrous Butti's including one that got half his face torn trying to attack an arowana, and continually kept up his attack before being moved to another tank...

Also i totally agree with the black shark too, they are destructive! I had a juvenile beat up a whole host of tough cichlids, I was in shock.
