Is it possible for a fish to not eat until he dies??? For the pass week or so, my dovii is not eating, he has a big gash on his side but that's starting to heal and now there's a new issue of him not eating. I do water changes every week, so I'm pretty sure my water is fine. Can someone help? All he does is run for cover or he looks at the pellets and say . . . . ."eh" and then swims away. He actually doesn't say "eh" but you know what I mean.

Thanks

Do you have pics? Need more info.

What are the water parameters?
How long has the tank been running?
How large is the fish?
How big of tank?
How long have you had the dovii?
Was it ever eating? If so what?
How did it get the gash?
Any other physical issues you see?

Most fish can go a couple weeks no food. But if there is something wrong that can change things. Have noticed any odd fecal matter? Could have an infection or parasites. Need to know more so we can advise you.

Try different food offerings, soak them in epsom salt and garlic for 30 minutes. Garlic for health and appetite and the Epsom in case of internal parasites.

Well he's around 16 inches and he's in a 220 with his female and they are guarding their fry. The tank has been up and running for about 2 years, and I have had him for over three years. I don't know my water parameters sorry about that. As for as food he eats talapia fillets as a treat krill and hikari gold. He got his gash from running into driftwood during a water change "theres another post i made about that" and ever since then he won't eat. Now I just noticed that his female has a white spot on her, it's not ich, it looks like a big zit. I hope this helps. As far as fecal matter I haven't seen either one go. By the way the female isn't eating either.

I would be testing water conditions. Will wait to see your pics. Get pics of the females issues as well

If they're both acting like this, I'd definitely check water parameters. If they check out OK, then I'd suspect some type of parasite or infection. Get some pics up of the white spot and the gash, maybe someone on here can ID a potential issue. Good luck with them.

Ok I'm trying to get pics up, but the dovii's aren't exactly posing for me. I'll try again. Update, I was reading about similar problems on different threads and a lot of problems seem to be solved by salt. So I tried dumping salt in the aquarium according to dosage I saw on here, and probably 2 hours later the white spot on the female is gone, but there is still a contusion present from where the white spot was, and she is still not eating. Also, my male is starting to eat but, I don't know if he's actually eating the pellets or spitting it out for his fry. Do any cichlids actually feed their fry that way???????? Its Just an observation that ive noticed, and I'm assuming that's what they were doing over the years of raising fry, because he spit out quit a bit. It's the first time he's touched food in a week or so, could this be a breakthrough? Or is he just simply feeding fry? Either way it was nice to see him go for food.
