I have a small male Dovii and an even smaller Honduran Red Point going through the motions of breeding. They are in a tank that is already divided to protect the Rp and small Jag I have from the Dovii. Recently I have noticed that the Dovii and Rp have been gesturing to each other through the partition, which only the Rp can swim through. I noticed today that the Rp had laid eggs under a small cave I had. Only problem was that the cave was on the side the Dovii can't get to. I have moved the cave over since, hoping that it helps the Rp make it over to the correct side if they do want to try again, but I am curious whether this cross would even be possible. Does anyone have any ideas?

My only concern would be the Dovii killing the Red Point. He is by far the roughest fish I have ever owned, and for the past 6 months or so hasn't been able to live with anything without trying to kill/mutilate it. He's 4-5 inches now and seems to get more intolerant by the day. If they do mate the Red Point will have a difficult time fanning her eggs without him destroying her, unless he changes his attitude.

Good thinking, I could swap their sides without disturbing the eggs. The tank they are in is already split 50/50. I appreciate the response.

That would be an awesome breeding. I love Doviis and can't wait to hopefully see results. I always make egg crate dividers and leave just enough room to slide a slate rock or clay pot bottom underneath. That way you know when the eggs are laid they are always close to the male. Good luck

What's up Gruff, good to hear from you. I agree that these are going to be weird if they do figure it out, and to be honest I was kind of hoping that any cross breeding would have involved the much closer related Jag, but it's their prerogative. (The Jag is honduran and it would have looked pretty cool mixed with the costa rican dovii.) As it stands these two couldn't look any more different, which I guess turns them on, and I'm not here to question nature, whatever floats your boat. If they do produce I will be sure to follow up though, and since I won't be raising all of them I can donate some to anybody who would want one. I got to admit it would be interesting to see the adult version.
