dovii

I agree it is difficult to sex them when they that size.

From Worldcichlids.com:

"Dovii's are relatively easy to sex once they reach maturity, with females developing a more yellowish background colour as opposed to the silvery background of a male. Males will also develop impressive nuchal humps as they grow."

How big is your tank? It is recommended by most that you want a 300-500 gallon tank minimum to keep a single Dovii. Males will grow to 20"-24" and are extremely aggressive. Have you seen the Terminator movies? Thats what you are dealing with. Brute strength with the ability to kill without remorse.

I have heard/read stories of Dovii that will appear to be co-existing with it's tank mates and then seemingly overnight "snap" and start killing everything in the tank that moves.

Do some searches on this forum, there is a wealth of knowledge here.

If that's how worldcichlids.com sexes dovii, remind me never to go to that site! Kidding..... Yes females get yellower and some males have humps of various sizes, but you won't see much of either in small fish.

As VRCW said, spotting in the unpaired fins is the easiest way to tell.

what are the unpaired fins
I'm new to this

Any fin that doesn't have a pair. For example, there is only one caudal (tail) fin, one dorsal fin, and one anal find. Look for spots in those.

Pectoral and ventral fins are paired (two of each).
