I would agree Jack Demsey are not mean fish. But I think they got there name for being a tough fish not a mean fish. I've kept adult male JD in community tank setting with other non cichlid peaceful fish.

Any semi-aggressive/aggressive intelligent species will have variables in their personalities. It's ridiculous to assume otherwise. I've seen some hyper aggressive JD's strangely all seemed to be female. Mine kills anything I put in the tank with her. I also have a midevil that is extremely docile. I have two electric blue acaras that are very aggressive, they're the only fish I have that bite my hand when I'm cleaning the tank. I had an opaline gourami that killed an oscar and two common plecos.
