Also, for the casual businessman, turning a profit on fish sales is quite the trick. The ones that stay open usually sell puppies on the side or are financed by wealthy hobbyists.

I agree that a petshop that sells fish has a greater chance of survival versus a fish store. Puppies, kittens, hamsters and birds do appeal to people and it keeps the doors open. Selling fish only, can be difficult in this economy.

It's a combination of the poor economy and competition from the corporate stores such as Petco, Petsmart, Petland and others.

x2 . . . the smaller LFS cannot compete . . . some of the better specialty LFS will survive, but anyone on the margins gets wiped out . . .

Within a 50 mile radius from where I live, in about 3 years, about 5 fish stores went out of business.

For fish, I usually buy from a LFS rather than online or a big box store. For dry goods, that is another matter all together since buying online and big box stores have better prices. But the plus side in this, is that I could use the money that was saved to go to the LFS to buy fishes from them.

I have seen 3 specialty LFS' close and one new one open. The chains were not touched.

I think one reason that LFS are closing could be that their buisness model was weak....Sure a Part of a good LFS is having fish and keeping the store clean, but if you don't tend to insure your customers happieness or do not offer something worth going back to then people just wont go back

Yea one of my favorite lfs where i get many oddballs such as tigs orinos arapaimas gatf vatfs paroons and my blackworms from just closed and i used to drop by evrytime i was in the area....i use to tip them and everything and now they are closing:cry::cry::cry: im soooo sad now

Fish street in Hong Kong there have been a surprising number of shops closing down, even a lot of the upstairs shops... although no idea if its the economy, or the raise in rent that caused them to close down...

After the 1st of August we lose our last LFS. Its a good thing in the since that the guy was a rapist and he carried crappy fish. http://www.katu.com/news/85837932.html

I drive an hour out of town to the city of Eugene for my fish.

All in all tho, do you have pretty good access to various fish where you are at? Never been to Hong Kong.
