Downsized my stock

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you have 2 15 inch massive waste producing plecos in your tank. they alone pretty much max out the bio load. If you think the fish are boring then take sarahs advice and do africans, tetras, or danios. You can take the advice of experienced hobbyists here and avoid a tank full of dead fish from ammonia poisoning or learn the hard way.

Why is this thread still going on? This guy is clearly clueless and doesn't want to take anyone's advice.

You asked a question, you got your answer, in fact you got the same answer several times. Don't like it? You're free to do whatever you want, it's your tank... but don't expect anyone here to tell you you're right, because you are not.

Dude your tank from the demensions you gave is considered a small tank. Why not donate all the fish and get a small school of roseline barbs they are colorful and very active. If your girlfriend doesn't want to get rid of the plecos then just keep them as that is enough in such a small tank. Also start doing some water changes about 50% twice a week to break down all those toxins in your tank. Hope this helps

I'm not saying I have a monster tank by any means shape or form. I understand that 80 gallons is on the way smaller spectrum of tanks compared to the rest of MFK. in fact I understand that several members have triple to ten times the gallonage or even more than I currently own. I guess my understanding of the bioload to filtration/WC ratio must be wrong, but with roughly a filtration rate of 15 times an hour, a media composition composed of cermaic rings, bioballs filter floss and micron pads, must not be "enough" for my bioload even though a 5 times per hour cycles rate is considered adequate. I understand that the plecos are a nitrate factory, I understand that the stock in the tank cannot live in it for the life of the fish, nor do I intend for the fish to stay in the tank their entire life. I apologize for any grief this thread may have caused among my fellow MFKer's, I just cannot fathom the entertainment value of single fish exhibits. I sell off my stock on a regular basis as it out grows its man made environment.

I now ask the MFK community what would you suggest stocking the tank with after I remove the current stock.

If you don't want to devote an entire tank to one fish, why not a pair? A pair of lyonsi would go great in an 80 gal, and they're great fish with beautiful colors.

If you're looking for more than that, stick to 3-4 of the cichlids that stay under the 7"-8" mark. Some good options would be Salvini, Sajica, Cons, HRPs, Cutteri, Centrarchus, or if you want to go SA, you could try some of the smaller acaras.

I wouldn't mind mixing south americans with central americans. I would like to move away from the Amphilophus fish unless i can find a male Amphilophus sagittae, which i hear only reach around 8inchs, and even then I would want to add more fish to the tank.

saggittae's get a lot bigger I have a male pushing 10"... they max out at 12" just like most other amphs

damn. well, I guess no amphs for me then.

I also read saggitae like to swim and need lots of room to do so. I wouldn't keep them in a 4ft tank. A pair of centrarchus would be great in that size tank. I would honestly get any pair of the smaller growing centrals like sajica, centrarchus, cutteri, meeki, ellioti, paisones. And keep them with maybe some livebearers or tetras or something like that.
