Dozen New Discus Arrive

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have 12 discus in a planted tank. Keep the sand clean, do your water changes and it should go well. They grow quickly at first then they seem to slow down. Ihave them up to 5" but none have seem to have paired off. I use RO water and the fish just seem to thrive. They eat flake well, as well as frozen. I have had no problem whatsoever once the tank was established. (Idid lose 1 or 2 when I first started, but since then nothing) The 2 I lost were much smaller than the others in the tank, that may have been the cause I am not sure. Enjoy them, they are real relaxing to watch.

Can you share your planted tank? so far i have a pair. They spawned but did not make it. i feed them live blackworms and flake and they grow so quick that i think 100G is too small for them. Also, I want a low light planted tank too, but still learning how things work such as lighting, fertilizer.....

Agreed to 3dees. Plain bottom is the best for discus. Remove all those gravels you have. Discus are extremely difficult to raise. They are very sensitive. If your tap water is not filtered, you may need to set one one. They don't live long with tap water (although you water condition being used). They also need to be warm (temp must be above 85). Water changes once a week is highly recommended. Very nice. Enjoy and good luck!

i have 20 discus in my 220g tank. i have white pool filter sand.
i have 8 clown loaches and about 5 marbled crayfish and they eat all the left over from the discus. i do 40% wc every 4 days and i feed them beef heart 3 times a day that i prepare myself.

Ummm, bare bottom is the easiest to clean due to the frequent water changes that should be done with discus. Yes they're are sensitive. Discus do fine and live happy lives in tap water, as mine do. Temp is usually kept at 84dgrs from juvi stage through adulthood................

Bare bottom is the best but my tank is in the living room and i hate to see their waste at the bottom. When you see their waste, you know that it's time to clean up and it's easier vacumn.

They are pigs and grow so fast. So i upgrade to 180G with 15 discus now and have possible 3 pairs. They spawned so many times in community tank and i want grow a little bigger around 5.5" - 6" then i move them to breeding tanks. anyway, i have couple questions:

what is the real name of Lime Yellow? i saw it keep switching partner between red ruby and pigeon checker, so if i want to breed them which one will best to pair up with lime yellow?

here is my new tank
