ok, I'm working on stocking ideas for my 110gal FO setup. I was cruising the SW section of a fish store near me and I saw an eel labeled as a Dragon Eel that caught my eye and was rather pretty. The price listed was $150 reduced.
Sooo... I went home and started researching, but would like to know first hand how difficult these guys are to care for. I hear they get 3' but are they particularly active (ex: a python can get 10' but be happy for life in a 6' enclosure)
Also, everywhere I've looked these guys are EXPENSIVE as int $500+ so this really sounds like a deal too good to be true. Are they any more difficult to care for than most moray eels? Picky eaters? Incredibly agressive?
If this thing is still there on Thursday I would like to pay for it and put it on hold until my tank is completely cycled, so I'll be researching and ready for it before it comes home with me.
The following is a pic sort of what it looks like, only it is almost brown with white spots, alot darker than the one shown in this pic.
Should I get it?

The eel you are describing sounds like a Mexican dragon moray. That or a Brazilian Dragon. Both are good eels.
The one you pictured however is a different story.
IMO those dragons are not as hardy as other eels. I have had Hawaiian (Orange in color around face) and Japanese dragon (Brighter red in color as in your picture) eels and they both died very suddenly and quite unexpectedly. They were both eating very well and within 3 weeks of each other they just up and died after a few years in captivity.
But, my Brazilian dragon is doing great and has doubled in size since I've had him. (a year now)

I just googled the Mexican Dragon eel, and the color looks like that, but the little feelers on his head are BIG more like the more expensive dragon eels.

If it is a mexican dragon moray that price seems kind of high. . .I dunno though . . .the only place I've seen them is at work. We have a 2ft one for 62.99 right now but I do know our mark up is insanely low on everything (in saltwater anyway) so that might very well be a good price.

Well, the place that has it is known for making mistakes on pricing alot... both good and bad. so I can't be certain. It wouldn't suprise me if they were asking alot more than the usual price on something like that.
If I can try to get a pic of the actual eel that may help huh?
