I had several in a 50 gallon breeder (48 x 18 x 13) that was brackish. I kept them for almost 3 years. The large one was about 12" and thick.
But yea, they are a brackish fish, there is a subspecies that is freshwater but it's very rare I can't remember it's scientific name right off hand though.
