Drains seem good and give you flexibility. I have a deepwater aquatics dc pump an it is super strong and quiet. The controller ballast did die on me after 9 months of use and they replaced for free. However, and as with any pump, they will eventually wear out and die. So, if you can swing it, use two pumps--one for each 1" returns. Just mho.
