Drain flies?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I get them as well. Their larvae look like small brown worms on the glass lid.

They thrive on moisture, food at the top corners and humidity (and when water splashes on glass from condensation). Also overstocked tanks with high nitrates/organic matter in the water help them thrive. Reduce humidity (Ion fan, dehumidifier) or run ac. They'll disappear quick. Keep wet filter media covered. They sometimes nest there too. Wipe excess water off glass lids.

Easy to whack off the wall with a towel, can't fly worth a damn.

Make natural cocktail repellent with therapeutic grade oils mixed in a bottle. These are best to use. Wipes out all kinds of bugs quick and everything smells minty fresh:

Peppermint
Eucalyptus
Clove
Cinnamon
Lavender
Citronella

Use any combo u want. Just spray along the baseboards or along window frame. Go easy these high grade oils are STRONG. Refresh as needed but the scent will linger for days.

Sounds like removing the glass lids for bit would help get rid of them

I once found my Jack Dempsey on the floor as he/she tends to jump. A lid is absolutely necessary for me. Every few days, I will wipe the underside of the glass lid down to keep them from accumulating.

They drive me crazy too so I bought lighted sticky traps from Amazon and use pool chlorine in the drains and I also spray some chlorine up inside the bathtub vents. If you remove the bathtub vent cover you will be surprised what's behind them. Anyway pull all the gunk and hair out of the vent and spray come chlorine inside the vent tube. After that they will settle down for a few days before they regroup. Wonder if a Archerfish or two would help?

You could use egg crate temporarily

Its pretty terrible…summer is rough, there everywhere and my wife would like to strangle me 😂💀… im down to 5 tanks but some of the filters are 55gal drums. Theres no stopping them from getting into any number of places that hold “fish water”. Its sad, but i feel a bit better hearing others have the same problem here lol… worst part is when u smash them they leave a black streak on the wall.
