Tonight I'm going to be cleaning my fx5 for the first time and was wondering what method you guys prefer the purge valve draining or the filter pump draining. From reading in the manual it sounds like the filter pump draining might be the best method cause it sounds like it drains all the water from the filter the first time around but I thought I would ask you guys.

Thanks

When I clean mine I usually unplug turn the valves off pull the intake valve off the canister and plug a hose onto the drain valve thats on the bottom open it up then drain

I disconnect the taps, lift the unit to the kitchen sink and empty it using the purge valve.

Exactly what i do, no messing about :)

i just dont screw with mine. i messed with mine for the first time in over 1 year few weeks ago and no difference in water params, effectiveness or really anything

I'm going to clean mine about once a month I don't want a nitrate factory or built up of sand in there because my Oscar thinks its funny to go over buy the intake and kick sand up and get mouth fulls and spit in in the intake. Its pretty funny cause the tank is right by the couch to were I can touch it. When he does it when I'm setting there I point at him and say stop and he looks at me then stops and starts swimming round.

I turn off valve, then disconnect the hoses. Take all the media/trays out of the FX5 and then with my manly muscles I lift up the FX5 like nothing and pour out the water into my basement sink. :D

Then I do whatever I need to do for the cleaning etc....
