ive had this guy for 4 months now and he used to be very bright. even brighter than good photo of him. it is my understanding that color losses are a normal occurance i just want to know if this much of one is normal. the water is good and he is the only red jewel in the tank. he eats and gets along with everybody fine. i have seen his color come and go but never this much.

the water is fine and i just did a change last week. the loss in color happened rapidly one day and has not gone back for like three weeks. hes eating but hes hiding a lot now. anybody? is he sick? is this normal?

Im pretty sure its normal.

I have 4 jewels and only one of them truly stays red all the time. We also have another that only turns red when trying to scar another fish off or just randomly at times. The other 2, when we bought the at the LFS were very red but now are the color of yours.

I would say its absolutely normal.

I used to have one that only got his color every once in a while. When I would remove my male lombardoi to stop him from beating on the female lombardoi, the jewel then became the dominant fish. So I'm kind of thinking you have the opposite going on, I think your jewel is losing dominance to another fish.

My auratus is one of the most peaceful fish in my tank. And the red jewel is deffinately the most dominant one lol he can be quite a jerk sometimes. I'm sure things will change with age though. I also have a yellow lab and a bumblebee they try to dominate but he chases them away usually lasts half a second.

Does anybody know of something I can do to bring his colors out without using chemicals? He is the prettiest fish when his colors are on. What I am trying to do is an all male tank with one type from different species. I like the variety.

Btw I want to post but the forum was closed. How were those jags? I was gonna give you my favorite recipe I use for gulf sheephead. Or tell you to try BBQ in foil I do it with redfish sometimes. Damn. Im hungry now lol

Bumblebees are real aggressive too. That's interesting on the Auratus. They are usually ready to start trouble.

IMO, a black background, white sand, and the combination of 50/50 and 10K bulbs bring out the best color in Africans. I think high quality lighting really makes a difference.

Do you use high quality foods (NLS, Hikari, Omega One, etc)?
