I've had this tank idea in mind for many years, and it will be many more before I can pull something off of this magnitude. Regardless, I wanted some preliminary MFK opinions, mostly about compatability and tank size. Here's what I got in mind, in, let's say, a 300 gallon.

Coral cat/epaulette shark
Blue spotted ray (dasyatis kuhli, though a taeniura lymma would be preferable should they lose their reputation in 10-20 years or so)
Volitans lion fish
Zebra moray
Porcupine puffer (a dogface would also do)

Also throw in some easy corals and anemones (whatever those might be, and whatever seems most fish friendly, I have no idea yet), and whatever other inverts might be possible with those fish.

Any feedback would be much appreciated, this is just the first step in many years of planning and research to make this thing happen once I'm out of college, married, and settled with kids. I'm shooting for before 2025!

Yup, if it had a beak it will not likely mix with corals.

I'd leave out the blue spotted ray and add a cortez or an atlantic...

Aquarists generally find it very hard to keep the blue spotted ray alive for a long period of time.

I would say no to the blue spot (hard to keep alive), no to puffer (picks on sharks and the lion) but that is a lot like the tank I am getting ready to set up.

sounds like it would make a nice tank. 300 gallons is plenty of water, but with most of your stock, its not the gallons that count, its the dimensions of the tank. The bigger floor plan you give the better living for rays and sharks. Be sure to research the sharks before purchase. There feeding and living conditions are very important. As mentioned above, avoid the blue spot. initial feeding is hard, and prolonged life is hit or miss. Id start the tank with your lion and maybe a bigger grouper or so. Once the tank matures, you can conisder adding your more sensitive live stock. Good luck, and please keep us posted.

Porcupine puffer is fine with corals, this has been documented in a few tanks, dogface however will pick at corals

This is irrelevant in this case like stated above. Puffers pick at sedentary animals. You don't want eye-less sharks and rays....

Other than that it looks pretty good. No anemones. They will sting sharks and rays that swim over them.

Same goes for corals, not stinging, but getting knocked around and killed by sharks and rays that will swim all over them.
