Dredcon Electrofishing catches.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i saw some thing on espn once they use it to figure out how many fish are in a body of water there on a skiff or something and send out a charge and it kind of paralyzes the fish for a while usually do it in weeds or a bursh pile then then have a big net they just scoop with and pick up fish
prolly expensive stoof

Portable units that are not on boats are like backpacks that hang on your back with a metal wire in the water and a pole where you can control the electrical discharge. It essentially stuns all of the fish between the 'tail' and the pole especially the larger fish.

Units are expensive and you need a special permit to collect fish this way, but you can catch almost everything.

That's why we wear waders... The backpacks aren't nearly as strong as the generator powered boat units-those could stop your heart.

You have to have all your permits in line (for research purposes) before you do any type of electrofishing (legally). If you ever have a chance to watch, or do it (maybe volunteering or something) it is a trip. It's amazing what you can come up with.

but if you want to catch fish for aquarium purposes, electrofishing is not the way to go since you want to catch them alive. electrofishing can stun and/or kill the fish. Even if they do live, they won't be as happy and it is sort of animal abuse... (like keeping a largemouth bass in a 5 gallon tank)

Fatalities are rare, the fish recover in a few minutes. I have been electrofishing for about five years and I can count the number I have seen killed by the shock on one hand. Death due to predation is another story.
