if they are tropical fish from regions with soft water conditions they will probably be happy
It's the shrimp that he is concerned about. Some inverts cannot handle substances that fish don't seem to mind so I can understand his aprehension.

shrimp 100% will be fine, if not better with the driftwood and tannin.

Yea the shrimp are the only critters im worried about.

I used to have ghost shrimp (before the CK ate them) and they loved the driftwood.

The question thats firing somewhere in the back of my mind, is what does the shrimp use to renew an exoskeleton? Is this in abundance in the environment & does tannic acid release interact with it? Just thinking out load at any rate. Ive never looked at shrimp properly from that standpoint.

Well, i checked my tank and it seems like there is a layer of oil on top of my water. Seems bad :( Has anyone ever experienced this? Oil like thing on top of your water from driftwood.

thats just the tanins from your driftwood. and if you do a partial(like 10%) water change most of it will go away and all the oils should be sucked up. it will not affect the shrimp or fish. the shrimp and fish will probably benifit from it.
