yes but if you want to maintain the clear water add carbon to the system and it will keep things clearer, just have to replace it on a very regular bases.
Yes this is normal. Actually black water fish from South America love this stuff. Boiling the wood can help speed the process of tannins leaching. This also is completely harmless and yes in time the wc will eradicate the promblem.
I agree. In my 75, I have a monster size chunk that takes up half the tank in width, a thick limb size that takes up the entire of length the tank, another face like piece about 10 inches high and 7 inches wide and 2 smaller pieces. Make sure you a have great filtration, it will keep the water clear, the wood decompsing smell gone and you will be satisfied. Enjoy!
Careful with that statement, that is only true if your water is soft to begin with. You will not be able to measure a difference even in the darkest tanks if your water is even reasonably hard. For the record.
yeah, it takes a while. mine is still slightly leaching tannins and I've had it for 6 months. I also boiled it and pre-soaked it for almost a month. early on it got so bad so fast that I could hardly see the fish in the tank. Still they didn't seem to mind and the pH did not drop much at all.
Haha! I was asking the same question last week. My tank is very yellow from the wood. I didn't want to add crabon cuz I was cycling the tank, but have done a few water changes and it's slightly less yellow. I am assuming that eventually with w/c it will clear up. Bit dissapointing tho as I am picking up a pair of Jack Demsppey's tonight and I don't think I'll be able to see there colours
