Yah what I do will work for beach driftwood, yah just have to weigh it down if it won't sink on its own.

I got lucky and found some in the woods where I bow hunt at. I still have to sterilize it though.

I think manzanita is the best looking wood for aquariums. check out manzanita.com. prices depends on lenth and thickness so you can get just what you want. they are in California so shipping should'nt be too bad.
