Howdy,

I know exactly how you feel. Hard to keep track of things. Posting the link was just easier for me than typing. I'm lazy :D

You and me both........ I've been asked how I can repair things so fast and I tell them it's because I'm lazy and I do it in the least amout of steps.

The driftwood will leach tannins into the water. This is perfectly fine and it actually conditions some of the SA cichlids into spawnin since it lowers the pH and what not. If you don't like the color of the water though just do water changes regularly and it will remove it. Or you could get drift wood that has already had all the tannins removed from it. Don't use PINE trees....I am leary to use them cuz I am worried about the tannins they may leach....dunno if anyone else has the same thoughts. Birch, Oak, Beech, and Bogwood are some great things to use!

Conifers fresh fruit woods, cedar, and other aromatic woods should be avoided because it is not just tannin that they leach into your tank, how about toxins like turpentine or camphor.

Where do you get that? When I bought mine they were already mounted and they looked very dry.

I know some reptile stores have woods that arn't mounted...

Back to the leaching, I remember reading somewhere, if you are pressed for time that you can boil the wood in just regular water and it will suck the color out faster and help it to waterlog.

As for the 50% water changes, that usually is a no-no with fish that cant handle great changes in water quality, and on a large scale water change sometimes the temp can fluctuate and cause your fish some undue stress.

repair- You do tank maintnence? Try using Kent organic Resin with a fine micron filter bag, The stuff really works and it is rechargable for 2 years. Your water will be crystal clear in about 24-48 hours.

If you soak your driftwood in boiling water for about 30min.-1hr. before you put it in your tank you will minimize the discoloration of your water. Be sure to get some carbon packs to put into your filter when you put driftwood because they will help soak up some of the yellow in the water. I also found out that if you can find something that helps get rid of the cloudiness in your water, use that after you do a water change (45-50%) and it will also help. I am just letting you what has helped me out.
