Drift Wood

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I live right off of Lake Erie and picked up some drift wood. It took months to finally sink.

I have actually drilled holes on the underside of the wood with a holesaw and then hammered rocks into the holes to weigh down pieces i couldnt live without. ;)

What kind of wood is it? I made the mistake of buying grapewood from a LFS and learned after of the cons of using this wood. Mopani wood is ideal, but if you boil this piece and soak it in a bucket with a rock over it, i am sure it will sink. Be aware though that certain wood will rot and is prone to fungus or chronic tannin leaching

Keep it boiling for 24-48 hours or if you can't wait you'll have to anchor it. I'd boil it anyway to remove tannins.

how do you boil something for 48 hours?

Tie it down with some fishing line, screw rocks into the bottom, or precariously balance large heavy rocks at odd angles on top of it, preferably right next to the glass.
