driftwood is turning tank water brown...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Totally normal and harmless. Like the folks have said it's the natural tannins leaching out of the wood. Boiling it for a few hours, or soaking it in bucket for a few weeks will get rid of that first rush of it when it goes in the tank.

When people say it will lower pH, thats because stuff leaches out of it, and it's brown stuff. A bit like tea leaching out of tea leaves.

Carbon in the filter will absorb some, water changes will reduce the effect.

After a while it slows down.

A lot of wood leaches.... I place new pieces in my pond waterfall (4500 GPH) for a few weeks = no tannings in tank.

Rinse, repeat, repeat, over and over til the water in the bucket or cooler is clean.

Driftwood will soften the hardness and lower the pH. Not by any substantial amount, but your south american fish will like you for adding the wood in.

:iagree: Most SA's prefer the water that color. It seems to make them more comfortable. The only problem is if you don't like it. Oh, and the soft water being subject to a PH crash.

Tannins have been found to have a feminizing effect on fish near paper mills because they act as an endocrine disrupter. A few pieces of wood wont do much harm so dont worry. They aren't completly harmless, but they wont hurt your fish in such a small concentration.

It's called Tannins, many pieces will do it for months or years.

Best solution without a doubt, Seachem Purigen. This product is nothing short of brilliant, I will never own another tank that doesn't have Purigen running inside it's filter.

yes the last one i had did it for months and even boiling it was no help..finaly gave up and bought another one and after boiling this one i did not have a problem..

its supposed to do that. They aren't harmful, as far as I know. Soft water fish like it, and a few types of cats (panaques, I think) will eat some of the driftwood.
