Driftwood Mold?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ive had the mold like stuff on some of my driftwood pieces and its been in the tank for about a year ...no casulties...some of it looks like food mold ...some looks like like a type of whispy algae.

I have that slime whenever I add new wood to a tank. Takes care of itself in a few weeks and my plecos love to eat it as well. The slime is harmless, but putting the wrong species of fresh sappy wood in your tank is not harmless. Old cured wood of any species is fine as long as all the sap is gone. It's the fresh conifer wood that's the known enemy.

I've been using grapevine pretty successfully. It takes a long time to bog down with water, but other than that, it's great. The BNs and my Clown Pleco love it.

my peasie ate the brown algea off my driftwood and when i put in my flagtail it ate everything else off it including the "mold" your referring to. my piece looks like the day i put it in now.

I soaked it in extreme saltwater for a week, and then in freshwater for about the same.
And I scrubbed the heck out of it with a sponge/toothbrush.

The mold just looks like regular peachfuzz-mold, and I'm not planning on touching it.
Some of the mold is above water, so I definately have to remove it before it gets in the air, or is that even possible?

This driftwood is massive, one of the pieces is probably 24" and very thick, so I don't think it's even possible to boil it.
I suppose I could bake it, and I'll probably do that after I scrub it.

I was thinking about Otos but I personally don't like them too much haha.
I'll go get some in a couple days or so, unless Ghost Shrimp will eat this stuff.

Half of you say it's poison, and the other half don't seem worried at all.

But based on the above, should I remove it entirely if the problem persists after baking?
Water need change regulary, else it becomes stale as microbes in the water will die and leave waste, hench stagnant water which is probaly why you have had mold problems.

I would suggest another approach for your combersome problem such as steaming, big kettel or whatever you can put on the stow with a lid or make a consentrated steam-plume to heat the wood.
