Anyone know where I can get a large piece of driftwood on Long Island to use as a centerpiece in my 90 gallon tank?

My tanks are smaller than 90 gallons, but I have had good luck looking locally along rivers/streams here in NJ, especially after hurricane Sandy. Now the waters are low too. Bring a hand saw and look for Oak trees and branches along rivers that have been downed. On a downed tree, go to the root ball and hand cut a piece to fit in your tank. Leach it in a 55 gallon garbage can. I've gotten my driftwood this way for years.

Sounds like a good idea.We do have lakes and streams here on Long Island. But I am worried about all the fertilizers and pesticides that were and are used here. And what other nasty things could be in the wood.I know you said to soak pieces in a 55 gallon pail until it leaches but I am still worried. Especially putting pieces in my Discus tank.

If you are looking to buy, Petswarehouse in Carle Place has alot of nice pieces, some big ones too. Aquahut in Coram has some as well, they had alot of really nice pieces a few months ago, but sold alot of it. You could always check out manzman on the vendor page as well, has alot of cool pieces and the prices are reasonable. Hope this helps.

I've been to Aquahut in Coram before. Good people there and reasonable prices. I'll give them a try.If nothing there I'll try pets warehouse. Thanks.

I would be a little bit wary with it being a discus tank. But, most areas that surround water don't allow fertilizers to be used (legally). With proper leaching I would think anything bad would be leached out. Not to mention doing your usual water changes would keep the water clean. I've only ever used native oak driftwood that I find. I have yet to have a problem because of the wood. Sometimes I get fungal growth on the wood while starting it in the tank or leaching it, but 7/9 times with proper scrubbing that goes away with a few washes.
