That sounds very practical and feasible.
I've just always used rock salt. It's cheap and low effort and works in my plastic trash can.

Had to cut and reassemble with 3'' stainless steel screws. 5'6'' doesn't fit through the openings provided by the tank braces...

Oddball Oddball do you think this will lower ur pH level? If so how would you combat that problem?? Unless u do want to keep ur water pH at a lower level.

In my experience it doesn't lower the PH as much as it does visibility

Are you inquiring if wood lowers pH? Well, there's more to water chemistry, i.e. buffering capacity of your tap water (kH). And each piece of wood has different levels of tannic acid etc depending on tree species, time it was waterlogged etc.

My pH is just below 6 and I do not expect any changes.

That's cool! Planted in like that makes the wood look better imo :)
