Driftwood problems

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had a big piece of drift wood and it took a 24 x 12 inch 10 mm thick porcilin tile to hold my piece down. And it still wanted to float around.

I'm taking a few pieces of wood up north camping this weekend. Big fire pit and a metal garbage can is how I'm going to cook mine. Add tons of salt and all should b good.

I've got 2 pieces that have teen submerged since January that still won't sink. Nothing a few strategically placed rocks won't handle though.

Some pieces may take years to become waterlogged enough to sink.

X2 ...I do this in all of my tanks with manzanita.

If this is not an option or if you want to just try something different, the screw through the tile trick can definitely work.

Home depot sells individual "12x"12 natural slate tiles for like a buck a piece. Use a masonry bit to pre drill the tile and then make sure you use a stainless steel screw to attach the wood to the tile. I'd also suggest putting a dab of 100% silicone (GE silicone 1) over the head of the screw as well and give it adequate time to dry.

As mentioned this works great because it gives you a large base to lay rock/ substrate on.

Good luck and make sure to post pics when you're done.

I just used to get some fishing line, and tie a rock or slate to the piece of wood and periodically check to see if would sink on its own... then i would untie the rocks and place the wood in whatever position i want...

I'm not sure why everyone is suggesting slate/tiles, a piece of acrylic will do the same job and be far easier to drill!! I'd be reluctant to weight it down with rocks, if something happens that piece of wood is going to shoot up like a missile.

The acrylic will be more expensive than a $3 peice of slate though

I have the same problem with my piece of driftwood atm, it's been a month and it still wont sink. I have weighted it down with 3 rocks placed not very decoratively and it's bugging me. Waiting for it to sink in so I can do some aquascaping as well but if it takes to long I might use the slate/tile with a screw idea.

True, guess it depends on what you have and where you can get it. I've got a big pile of acrylic offcuts I've scrounged from the local acrylic suppliers 'bargain bin' for a couple of bucks each.

I have a piece that I took out ofmy 120 n it was only out a week. Put it in my 220 2 weeks ago n it's still floating -_- it takes a while, you can put rocks on it though to hold it down
