Kinda late on this thread, but was looking for ideas for my latest acquisition... A Silver Maple root chunk that fills a 3' cube!! So boiling is out of the question. I took it to the carwash and blasted hell out of it. Going to have to be good enough, since didn't see anyother good ideas.

I think boiling is your best bet and probably the safest though it is a b.... :-/

I been wanting to go find my own driftwood myself but i been reading more and more and the risk is high, i have buch of plecos that cost me alot of money and I dont think I want to take the risk. Let me know if you get successfull on this project. good luck

the one piece i got had a lot of rot in the middle so i cut it half hollowed it out then stuck it back together with a couple stainless screws.

If you are worried about the wood leaching toxic chemicals you could always cover it with epoxy.
