driftwood question?

Howdy Ace Nick,

Have you tried changing the peat more often? A tea color indicates that humic substances are present, but it does not necessarily mean that your peat is still capable of keeping the pH low.

Good luck,
HarleyK

I change the peat monthly....but im starting to think that i might just be i using the wrong peat moss....im using peat plates from an aquarium store that i guess would normally be used to line the bottom of an aquarium....and the only reason i do this is cuz im not sure about how to filter your every day peat moss from a gardening store....it seems really fine....what would filter that??? ive tried 3 pillow cases and it still gets through??? mayby filter floss would work....havnt tried it?? would these peat plates be less acidic than everyday peat moss??? i just dont understand why the ph always goes up....recently i tried leaving just a bucket of water in my house and teh ph in that went from 6.4 to 7.2 in 3 days and i had a huge bag of peat moss sitting in it with a power head circulating the water??? shouldnt the ph of went down????? WTF

Howdy,

You could see if your LFS has either peat granules as filter media or maybe a filter bag for peat. You can also check online stores for EhfiTorf (by Eheim).

Good luck,
HarleyK

Hiya Ace, what is the pH of your water before you add it? Also what kind of substrate do you have? If your tank contains crushed shell or coral, or even limestone or marble your ph will slowly rise.

ya...im looking into that harleyk.....havnt been able to find pelets or anything yet.....but i think im going to try everyday peat moss...ill make a filter cartrage from a media bag and then cover it in filter floss....hopfully that will help.....and the Ph of the water im adding is 6.4.....which brings my tank water ph of 7.6 down to 7.2 for a few days and then its back at 7.6 again.....and all i have as a substrate is rock...no coral, limstone, shell....only aquarium rocks bought from an aquarium store....i do have an air pump....but if i take it out of the tank my fish get about very skittish and i really dont think they like it...there very different....i tried using a power head to circulate instead but they didnt liek that either....they only seem happy with the air pump for surface agitation????....how big are the effects of pumping air into the water on Ph cuz i never thought they were very big??should i try with no air pump or ower head???? i know these fish love high o2 levels whic is why i havnt tried??

fluval peat i used it it works great dropped my ph to 5 might have been lower than that gotta watch when you use that stuff

I bought fluval peat granuals at big als....ive been in there a million times asking about it and nobody showed me that they had it there...they kept showing me peat plates (which did nothing at all...and i mean nothing)......wtf..... and then the other day i came across it.....i put it in and now im just waiting to see the effects....the Ph seems to actually be staying aroud 7.2 so far....its been 2 days....stil waiting to see the drop but at least its not rising.....the only thing i guess i need to figure out is exactly how much i should be using to get the ph around 6.5.....i love trail and error....

Fluval peat granuals.worked a miracle.....stable Ph has been achived....but i just got a new job and im going to be out of town for 30 days at a time...i dont know what to do with my tanks...figure out one thing and another thing comes around
