I didn't. my pieces came out of lake huron. some beached, some still submerged. quick spray with the garden hose to get the sand or mud off and in they went.

So bleached wood is generally safe? And by bleached I mean already has been soaked and dried up on the bank

I haven't come across any unsafe wood.
wood that's been waterlogged then dried out can float for a loooooong time.

A bunch of my driftwood is Lake Ontario picks, never did anything more than hose it off on my deck before I put it in. I have a piece that has been in my tank for a year and will still float if I take the rock that's holding it down off of it
