This is a follow up to a previous post..

I now managed to get it on video, youtube link below: (sorry a bit long but if you fast forward it gets pretty crazy)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o87H6WzA6_Q

Has anyone seen this before? / knows what it is?

It happens at every waterchange when I am about half way on the refill.. like clockwork..
"Smoke" then clumps together and sticks to everything..

Not really sure...Maybe the type of wood you have is reacting to the chemicals such a de-chlorinator/water conditioner ( assuming every batch is different ). For example, like some bottles of seachem prime will have tiny black particles and some don't.

Did you add something to the tank or did you do something different recently to the tank?

Hope you find your answer soon. Good Luck!

Also, that cobweb thing looks similar to surface film when you disturb it. Maybe some kind of bacteria thing going on in your tank? haha again not 100% sure.

That is very weird?

OK thats weird. Why do you leave the wood in there? lol
Heres my shot at a theory though. There is some sort of chemical, natural or otherwise, that is leeching out of your wood. You only see it after a water change because once the water in your tank reaches the saturation point for this chemical the osmotic pressure ballances out and the remaining stuff stays put in the wood. Once you do a water change, the system is imballanced again so it starts coming out of the wood into the water until pressure/ballance is achieved.
Im no chemist, far from it, but I tried to stay awake in school.
If you really want to keep the wood I would try boiling and soaking a few times and then test if out again.

How long have you had the driftwood in there? If it's new, it may still be leeching out tannins.

:iagree:

^ I've never seen tannins looking like that, and that clumped up like that. I'd personally be taking the piece out. Where did you get it? Are you sure of what kind of wood it may be? Have you lost any fish as long as you've had the DW in there with this "smoking" problem? Idk, but I wouldn't leave it in there either. If anything I'd soak it for a few months in a rubbermaid containter with regular water changes, and then try it back in the tank.

What kind of precautions did you take before putting it in the aquarium? B[YT][/YT]oil it, let it soak? And also how long has it been in there? I have never seen anything like that but I am thinking semperfish may be on to something
