It can take months to remove all the tannins from a large piece of driftwood. What can help the process is to use salt to leach it out.

If you have an extra tank or big enough storage container throw the driftwood in there and put in several cups of salt, along with good water circulation. Take out water after two days and repeat entire process. I used up a 50lb bag of salt from HD to do this. Salt is cheap no more than 5 or 8 bucks.

Maybe thats why I have never had a problem with staining. Driftwood in brackish with Purigen.
