So I just got a piece of driftwood on saturday. I soaked it for two days in boiling water and put it in my tank. Now after three days the water isnt so clear. what gives? any advice?
It may be that you just stirred up a bunch of crap from the rocks when putting the driftwood in and it just needs to settle and filter out.
I put a piece of driftwood in my tank about a month ago and it didn't affect the water clarity, so I don't know what the problem is. I would say if your water doesn't clear up pretty soon to take the driftwood out and makesure it isn't rotting anywhere and soak it some more.
I soaked my driftwood for two or three weeks before putting in my tank and it still leeched some tannins. Tannins aren't harmful to fish so just keep up with normal water changes and it should go away in time.
Is the water just colored/tinted or is it cloudy??? My water has more of a yellow tint because of the driftwood but it crystal clear. If it's just tinted, no worries
You can try using purigen. From my experience, I found that helped with removing the tannins (if that is your problem) quickly...I'm sure others here can vouch also.
You are not alone. I dropped 3 pieces of wood in about 5-6 weeks ago. Still leeching....
I finally submitted to Purigen last night (I was using regular Carbon). I purchase 100ML and also a packet of Matrix Carbon (both are Seachem products). I stuck both bags in the Magnum 350 and will hopefully get some good results.
I will continue 50% weekly water changes and will post results from the Purigen/Matrix here in a week or so.

Update on the Purigen, it's been 4 days, the Purigen works a little better than the regular carbon but it's not a magic remove all tannins formula. The wood is still leeching. I figure I have a few more 50% water changes, we will see. I might have to pull the wood out and boil it, but the tank is clearing up, so I might just ride it out...
Far as pricing, 100ML packet of Purigen is a few dollars cheaper (give or take) than a 36OZ container of carbon. You can recharge the Purigen so I would just go with that.
