Driftwood won't sink?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Longest i waited was about 6months... As with all things related to fish keeping, patience seems to be key, otherwise theres always rocks ;)

Some driftwood just refuses to sink. I found 10 pieces on a beach last year, some sunk in a couple of days, some in a few weeks and i still have 1 piece that still floats if not weighed down.

The best solution that i found is to screw pieces of slate to the bottom of the wood.
You should attach the slate to an area on the wood that allows for the slate to be buried under the substrate.

you can always tie a piece of slate onto the bottom of the driftwood with fishing line. After a few months it may not float anymore. I had to do this with a piece I found on the shores of peggy's cove.

For size reference, those are 17 year old Redhook silver dollars. Wood has been submerged at least 5 years and still requires slate to keep from floating. It is an old grapevine. It's a little over 4 ft long.

Natural color, they have yellow and red spots, more pronounced in some than others
