Mopani wood has MUCH more tannin (usually) than malaysian. It will reduce your pH noticeably & soften the water very well
 
If your kh is high you could fill the tank with wood chippings of all kind and it's not going to soften it even the least bit. So you really should test the kh of the water 1st.
What fish are you trying to soften it for? Almost all fish will do just find in hard water.

In that case you shouldn't need to worry about water hardness a bit. Worry about water quality (low nitrates) instead and your fish will be all the healthier for it.
 
You're listening to the wrong people.
Edit: I was talking about that water change myth. I don't know what a 'flower' is but given the fact that snakeheads have taken over many local waters in the states I'll go so far as to say they don't need soft water.
