I dont think rinsing it with cool water is enough. You've gotta kill any bacteria and organisms on the driftwood, so using hot water is the best way to go. Plus you need to keep it in the water long enough for the hot water to get into every part of the dw and cleanse it. So rinsing isn't enough. It needs to be boiled or sit in a bathtub of hot water to really disinfect it thoroughly.

Never do this!! There is still soap and other additives to get rid of the natural minerals in the water at carwashes. Even on the rinse cycle. If that soaks into the wood it will for sure kill the fish.
 
i put driftwood i found at the lake in my tank a little while back...NEVER AGAIN! soaked it for almost two months changing the water every week or two...it made my water green as balls! i'm sure you could get away with it if you're patient enough but not me i'll buy over priced driftwood from the store. was in there the other day 3x2 foot nice tangled driftwood "showpiece" for $169! c'mon unemployment check!
