Google search "lava rock grill", the cheap stuff from home depot is what I am talking about. Looks like red+brown porous rocks.
I agree, if you have a sump it would be counter-productive to remove it. Might as well use it if you got it! More water is always better.

If you have a sump, you don't need a sponge filter. The sump is the filter.

What happened to the brand new 6' 180 you said you ordered from your LFS?
Isn't that the point of the thread? LOL.
It is coming as a reef ready tank with a sump. That's why I was so hesitant at first but I am going to grab it, even though it's going to kill me financially .

Oh, I was confused.

Your opening paragraph said " if i were to get the tank" Not "I bought a new 180 with a sump what do i need to know"

Old habits never die

Your right. I did say that. Honestly, because I was contemplating getting something else, but I am researching about sumps and getting myself familiar with them before I dive in head first and fail that's all.

Ahh, I love the dig at me. But, I'm not the same as I was years ago, I appreciate the advice I get and the knowledge from other fish keepers.

You can put anything you want in sumps.
Some people compartmentalize them, I do not.
I put bio-media in mesh bags, which make it easy to pull out and rinse off when it gets too full of detritus.
I grow plants in sumps.
I have even used an outdoor pond as a sump for an outdoor tank.
Your only restriction will be your own imagination.

I don't always put sumps directly under tanks the way most people do, It allows me to make bio towers filled with lava rock, and fractionate out unwanted organics before they return to the system

You can appreciate advice and knowledge but still tell lies......Sorry but the story you fabricated about your friend is total BS.
No it is not.
Why would I lie about something like that, in of all places online?
Look, if you still harbor hard feelings towards me, why do you follow my threads and comment on them?
I have NOTHING to lie about or hide. I'm an open book. If you don't believe me check out my facebook page....

I was just starting to think you were a good person.... OPPS, that is a lie. :)
