Drilling holes in glass tanks?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I heard that you can't drill hole is tempered glass... is this true? And it seems to me that tanks would be made of tempered glass, am I wrong in that assumption... Is there a way to tell if the tank is tempered or not?

True, tempered glass is very likely to shatter if you try to drill it. Many (most?) tanks have a tempered glass bottom and regular glass sides. Google how to tell if glass is tempered glass. Tempered glass polarizes light so viewing a polarized LCD (laptop) screen through tempered glass will create lines on the screen as you rotate the screen. Google for a better explanation.

I've never seen a tempered glass bottom with out some kind of label. Of course it's possible but older tanks and odd size tanks are not tempered. Check out some tempered glass aquarium web sites and/or threads here. I remember somewhere a list of the most likely tempered sizes. I'm sure 55 gallon tanks were on there and 125's also but 40 breeders were not.......

You get that list coupled with the label on the bottom of the tank and your going to have a fighting chance of getting the correct information. Ultimately you wont know till you drill :)

Exactly. And if it is tempered, it will shatter.

right on, tnaks guys.. I will have to make sure I do my research before firing up the drill. I would be drilling the back side of the tank using the Glass-hole overflow... (or something like theirs).
