Drip System - Backyard Drainage

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wow that's a well thought out and executed drainage system. Nice work! You've given me a lot to think about. So much more than just a tube into the yard.

I'd still like to hear about or see pics if anybody else has drainage into their yard.

Yeah, i started out with just a tube but after adding three more tanks to my drip system im up to 5 gallons an hour. I had the swamp thing going on also
:-)
I had to come up with something to distribute the water. The water is all ready paid for and perfect for the plans. I couldn't just dump it down the drain.

I'll add another idea here. Using the same type of system pictures above, once you get away from the house a bit to the trees or garden or whatever you want watered - use a soaker hose instead of a single outlet opening to disperse it. Even at low flow rate the water will just slowly drip out along the entire hose allowing more even dispersal and less pooling. The 50 foot hose is only about $10 at Walmart and is 3/4 diameter. Once you have a spot for it you can easily bury the hose. Also, because the hose doesn't hold water it won't freeze in the winter either and you don't have to bleed it before winter storage.

I'm curious if that would work. I was going to do that on my system but I didn't think it would work on such a low pressure system as my drain. Plus the fish poo clogging it. I use my drain to drain my python gravel vac also, no buckets! I like the idea and I want updates even if it doesn’t work :)

I was going to recommend a soaker hose too. I used to use one when I was doing water changes on a koi pond I had at my old house. Made the flowers bloom great and really helped grass stay green

hmmm... the soaker hose sounds like a good idea. I would love to take advantage of the way Egon's system is designed, but where the drain is in my backyard, I don't have a lot of bushes or plants to water right there. Also have to consider the freezing temps we get here in the winter, which you may not get in AZ.

I might set up a dual system - have the tube coming out of my house that I can hook up to a buried soaker hose in the winter so it won't freeze, and have a regular garden hose in the summer that I can move around my yard to water the grass, and maybe plant a couple bushes around the area too.

these suggestions have really helped - thanks!

will a soaker hose work buried? I moved mine around the grass and flower beds never buried it. The whole winter freezing thing is why I don't have a drip system. I've always worried the drain to outside would freeze and break open the pipe or freeze and back up the pipe and then the water over flowing tank would flood my house.
And I just can't see letting it go down the drain seems to wasteful to me.

I'm not sure about the burying part, although it was mentioned above by Lusus_Naturae. I guess I'll have to try it and see what happens.

As for the line freezing, mine was setup almost all winter and didn't freeze. Granted we had a pretty mild winter, almost no snow at all. The water is 80 degrees so it's hard to imagine it will freeze on the short piping to outside. If it does freeze and start backing up the water, I have one of these sensors and if the sump waterline starts to rise the flow into the tank will stop:
