ok so from what i'm understanding its extremely simple, just constantly pours water in the tank, the water level rises which you have a drain at a certain point on your w/d filter and the water that reaches that level drains out. am i right? someday after college when i finally got a house, i'll have a system like this, that way only need to do sand vac's.

Yep, that's all it is!
I don't even have to do sand vacs with the fish that stir it up:)

Very nice, what's the setup of the carbon filter and how often do you have to replace the carbon.
It's an inline filter from Lowes and I change the carbon insert about every 2 months.

Never had an issue with either. Since they all stay pretty much exactly the same (water quality wise) I've never seen an increase as it goes down the line.

Please let me know what needs to be clarified. This was intended to help those who are intimidated by automated water change systems.

I bookmarked it...that should be enough :D.

Here is a quick question for you! I am thinking of doing something simular for my tanks that I don't have setup right now, do you cycle your tanks before turning on the drip system? Or will the drip not effect the cycle? I would more then likely suspect and with no info cycle the tank prior to turning on the drip system.

yup, probably cycle it first since the drip system will actually slow down the cycle, and really just cost money in water when you really don't need it.

I had them all established when I started the drip, but that's just because it happened to be that way. I didn't do that intentionally.

I usually don't cycle tanks though, I just add seeded media or transfer filters around.

How does the drip affect the temperature of the tanks? How do you dechlorinate the constant flow of water?

I understand it is much easier as far as backwork is concerned, but is your waterbill any different?
