Been looking into running a drip system only trouble is that I don't run a sump, I run 3 Eheim 2260's and was wondering if I spurred off of one of the returns with a T-piece and used a inline tap to control the amount of water leaving the tank. Anyone know if this would work ok or have idea on drip system without a sump ? Cheers

I don't think you'll ever get it quite right so you'll end up with too much or too little water leaving the tank.

If the glass isn't tempered, it's easy to drill a small hole and you could even do it while it's still filled. Alternatively, one of the up-and-over siphon systems could work for you but personally I've never been brave enough to run one.

Just run an overflow box if you don't feel comfortable drilling, but you need a sump.

I was very skeptical myself of overflow boxes, but after having messed with one now, I've been running it for close to a year and as long as you have the little pump that bleeds the air out they seem to work pretty well. I even modified mine for a 1.5" bulkhead and am running a majority of a 3K gph pump through it, still no issues.

I think the whole tapping into a canister thing has disaster writen all over it.

Yeah don't really fancy drilling the tank myself, have heard good and bad about overflow boxes, maywell have to give one a try. As you say I think I might have differculty getting the balance right if i tap into one of return pipes.

i see you are in the uk get one of the companys to come out and drill the tank

i have seen a few on AC or call a tank makers like ND to come and do it the risk is on them then

Funny u should say that T1 my currant tank is from ND and have been spoken to them about my next tank, also I see you had acrylic for 5 or so years, if you don't mind who made your tank ? As I'm swaying towards acrylic

The pump and float valve method I suggested on scott's thread for a sump works just as well on a tank or pond without a sump. Every tank and pond I have is setup on the same system, a pump hangs in the tank at whatever water level I want to be the lowest point. A timer activates that pump to drain the pond or tank down, a float valve slowly refills it with filtered water. Its all 100% automated, and given how slow a 1/4" float valve flows water you won't get large temp or water chemistry changes. It is a fully automated system that has worked flawlessly for me.

Cheers johnG I will have to sit down over weekend and see if it would work for me, without having a sump for the float valve to sit in maybe a bit difficult. Not really looking a option without having a sump running aswell

I often wish I did a sump... Less maintenance hassles and the ability to hold so much more bio. And probably reduced maintenance costs.

The 2260 is a fantastic large canister. The best in IMO. If I would much rather run 3 of those , instead of the 4 canisters I have now.

Keep us updated on any development .
