Drip System with a sump???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Why not? It would be hanging by the sump just like it would be if it were being used on a tank. The only problem that might arise is the drain situation. If your drain is above your sump then yeah, you would have to go the small pump route. But if your drain is lower than your sump, that overflow will work fine.

Because I have a sump that is 24" tall, but I only run the water in it at about 14". So I don't think the overflow would get the water over the lip of the tank.

Hmmmm, that should be fine though. I don't want to dig through my physics books so I googled it and saw this. So I think overcoming the 10" in your sump shouldn't be a problem. If you don't have a small pump to use right now you should try the overflow method. But if you have a spare pump or don't mind buying one then go for it. I know some people also have opted for the pump solution because with the overflow solution you have to keep the overflow at a certain height to account for the water level in the sump after a power outage when the water from the tank overflow drains so that when the power comes back on there is enough water so that the pump does not run dry. And if you keep your overflow for the sump set to that water level then that means you will always have that much extra water in your sump which might not be what you want i.e. more submerged media than you want.

Basically what I'm saying is that if you wanted to go with the overflow for the sump, I don't think the 10" distance will be an issue.

i'm assuming you have a glass sump? sounds like a float switch will be the best option if you dont want to drill. even drilling a glass sump will be easier/cheapier than doing a float switch :)

Yes I have a glass sump. I think I am going to end up drilling it. The overflow may work, but with the low flow rate and height it has to over come. I would always be worried about it.
