drip systems and rays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Okay i need some serious help understanding this process for my 900gal from locating where/how to find nearest home water source. Is there any complete kit that's for sale for something like this? Would using a RO system be better/cheaper? Seems like all you guys are using sumps vs wet/dry type set-up, should I reconsider this. I need a diagram or something. Anybody for hire down south? lol Help, help, help!

You need something to remove the chlorine and chloramine...if you think these are not present do not rule out as water boards can add to deal with bacterial blooms and this can result in ray deaths.

I use a. Hma, I heat the water as the uk is cold, I have a large garden with computerised irrigation and I use over 80'000 gallons per year, my water bill is cheap, I have a pool so I am on a water meter.

I love my drip but mine is only on for 1 hr per day and has many safety cut outs, the tank is plumbed to waste.

IMO people who run straight off copper piping and especially those who use hot water are exposing their rays to the danger of copper poisoning which could build up over time and kill a ray with unexplained symptoms.

I cannot speak for the whole US but around my neck of the woods every house built from the late 70s till about 5 years ago all used copper pipes. I have run my ray tanks for 3 years now with no issues. I actually have small snails growing in my ray pond which if copper was present they would die off.

Your first step is to call the water company to find out if you have chlorine or chloramine. If you have chlorine like myself then look at my thread I posted on page one. I use to whole house filter both equipped with carbon water filters. I am changing both filters every 3 months at a cost of $12. You do not need a sump as I redesigned my system taking the sump out. I used a downtube in the main tank that is cut at the level I want the water at. The tube runs through the bottom of the tank then under the house and out to the ditch. Do not tie into your house plumbing if you have a septic tank as you do not need to keep adding extra water to that or you will have to get it pumped eventually.

Many old houses have iron pipes up to the house and then copper internally. My point though is hot water systems ought to be avoided. Also, I was trying to explain that unexplained ray deaths could be the result of chlorine, chloramine or heavy metals building up over time such as copper...the hma or other in line filters help avoid this.

You also need quite high levels of copper to kill snails I think.
