but i guess, there are extremes - ear cropping of dogs, it doesnt improve their quality of life.
i dont think drop eye is something that causes suffering in arowanas.
fish is very fickle, fish wont breed if they are in bad shape generally.
some breeding specimens of arowanas have drop eye.

I'm starting to wonder if DE is caused by head trauma more than diet. Maybe Silvers are more prone to jumping and head trauma than other Aros? After all...we don't keep an eye on our tanks 24/7 so who knows if your Aro jumps and smacks it's head on the lid?

I wonder about that as well. My aro thrashes around a lot when seeking food and he probably hits his head once in a while (one of his eyes has DE)

When it comes to cruelty, everything is relative. PETA thinks putting fish in tanks are cruel but we all accept it here.

Drop Eye Surgery can be cruel depends on how you look at it. Some say it is merely for our benefit and others will say it's for the fish's benefit as well. Imagine if we had one drop eye we'd be begging to get surgery to correct it and yes, drop eye WILL affect our vision.

Some may say that the tail cutting is cruel like cutting the ears on a dog and others will think of it like getting your hair trimmed or cutting off a bad fingernail to let it grow back nicer.

Some will say Drop Eye Surgery causes the fish unnecessary pain and others will say the fish feels little to no pain from the drugging and the surgery will benefit the fish's vision in the end.

No matter how you look at it, everything is RELATIVELY RELATIVE in the end (unless it is DRASTICALLY DRASTIC).

Well...it's cruel because your pet can't talk back to you on a job well done . But that's how things are, the pet can't agree or disagree, so there are plenty of people willing to step in to do so. There's spectrum for what's acceptable is so long and varied there's no single correct answer.
