I want to kill some cichlids, but its my fault. I had my bowfin in a tank with an yellow lab, jewel, and jack dempsy. No problems for awhile, then last night I came home from work to find my bowfin with no bowfin left. For that matter most of his fins have been nibbled next to nothing. I know the culpret, the yellow lab. I watched him go for what little the bow had left. He's been in there with no prob for at least 2 months. I have removed him from the tank. He is about 7 inches and eats well. Now what? What, if anything, can I do to help him grow back his fins?

As long as you keep the fish free from any more stress and not let it contract any fungus or bacterial infections then the fins will regrow just fine.

If it were me i would keep it in a hospital tank. And do daily 30-50% water changes. i would also add some antibiotics or antifungal meds for a few weeks just to make sure it does not get any infection. A good common med around us is jungle labs fungus tabs and they are sold at walmart.

Also if you don't want to mess with it let me know and I will come over and scoop it up. :naughty:

I most certainly will not. This is my favorite fish and I would do anything for him. Since he is only 7" would a ten gallon hospital tank work? This is all I have to set up for him. He is in my 55 right now with some sunfish and bullheads. They are leaving him alone right now, but if the 10 will work, then I will set it up for him tomorrow. If you want any pumpkinseeds or yellow bullheads you can come pick them up, but I'm not parting with my bowfin. Nice try Hybrid.

:ROFL:Can't blame me for tryin.

But seriously man i hope the best for the little guy.

Don't blame the yellow lab for what it was doing. You are forgetting you have two other cichlids who are much more aggressive than the yellow lab. The yellow lab was simply eating the damaged tissues in response as do most other fish when a fish is severely injured. Get the bowfin out of the main tank and place it in the hospital tank. Do daily water changes until injuries heal completely. Your stock needs reshuffling, sorry.
