I wonder if it is caused by the fish banging its head? I have had mine crash into the top at night (spooked by other fish?) which is lexan, but there is the glass brace in the middle which is much harder. That can't be good for the fish and it seems to have a slight case of DE in one eye. It was real nervious when it was younger and was always going nuts at any movement it didn't like. It got a few nasty head and body wounds. Having it in with more fish has helped.

Perhaps prevention by having a greater space between water surface and cover or maybe a layer of bubble wrap between the two would help when they jump?

arowanas can leap a good few feet out of the water, unless you plan on having a two foot gap between, dont bother.

I keep about an 1 1/2" space. Keeps them from bumping while feeding. I think increasing the gap could worsen the sitsuation. Although it may lessen the number of bumps, I think the severity of the collision would increase. If the aros body is partially out of the water and the tail is still pumping, the speed will increase therefore making the collision more severe.
