Didnt someone have a similar sump setup using large sponges instead of sand? Even if they did eventually clog, they could just be wrung out I suppose.

Just because Jaubert was unhappy with his results is no reason to dismiss the concept completely.
lemcc, although it doesn't sound like your setup has been operating long enough to disprove the critics who say the difficulty of long term maintenance outweighs the potential benefits, perhaps a more detailed description of exactly what you are doing would be helpful. I have no issue with revisiting old ,some might say unsuccessful, ideas to see what benefits might be gained.
